Al Jazeera devices infected with spyware delivered through targeted ads
October 16, 2026
Al Jazeera reported that dozens of its journalists' devices were infected with spyware designed to collect sensitive data, and called it an assault on press freedom. As relayed by Democracy Now, Citizen Lab corroborated the findings: an Israeli advertising-technology company, Discover-Tech, used personalized ads to deliver spyware from Candiru, a firm the US government blacklisted in 2021. The infections are described as zero-click, meaning the target did not need to tap anything.
Why it matters
Advertising networks can be used as a delivery route to specific people, which is hard for the target to notice or block.
What defenders can take from it
- High-risk users such as journalists and activists should keep devices fully updated and turn on lockdown-style protections where available.
- Organizations that protect at-risk staff should have a route to specialist help.
