Canadians reported about $351 million in fraud losses in six months
2026-08-25 · Statistics · Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre says Canadians reported about $351 million in losses in the first half of 2026, and that only 5% to 10% of fraud is reported. Investment fraud led at about $139.6 million, followed by spear phishing ($57.7 million, already above its 2025 total), bank investigator fraud ($28.6 million), extortion ($25.5 million, already above 2025) and recovery fraud ($13.7 million).
What to do: Never move money to a "safe account" at an unexpected caller's request, check any change to payment details with the business through a number you already know, and never pay an upfront fee to recover money lost to fraud.
