Hong Kong police: HK$3.5 billion lost to fraud in the first half of 2026
2026-08-14 · Statistics · The Standard (Hong Kong Police)
Hong Kong police recorded 20,613 fraud cases in the first half of 2026, with losses of HK$3.5 billion. Investment scams were only about 10% of cases (2,151) but nearly half the losses (HK$1.66 billion). Police describe AI-generated personas or fake analysts promising guaranteed returns on social media and steering victims to fake trading apps, plus romance scams that end in cryptocurrency investments. One romance-crypto victim lost about HK$84.8 million.
What to do: Never move money to an investment you found through a stranger or social media, however friendly. A promise of guaranteed returns is the main warning sign.
